It’s about a year since Ahmed “Kathy” Kathrada passed away. Kathy fought apartheid alongside icons like Nelson Mandela. Mandela, South Africa and the world at large held Kathy in high esteem. I write this shortly after reading breaking news of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela‘s passing. Winnie fought apartheid. Her and Nelson were married at some point. She was 81.
For some reason I was thinking about the anniversary of Kathy’s death when I saw the news about Winnie. Hence the references to them. When Nelson Mandela passed away I thought about what makes a great legacy. I wrote some of my thoughts here. Thinking about Kathy and Winnie, again, made me think about the nature of legacies and how we remember people.

Who would’ve imagined that “productivity” would be an industry? Goals, outcomes, deadlines, whatever you call them, are an inherent, inescapable way of life and leadership. You are too tired when you are so tired you can’t rest. Rest is not only doing nothing but also doing something that replenishes. A recharge or boost is not necessary only when you’re tired. For all to do life well we need to be resting before we need to.

When I apply myself I expect to see a return for my effort. None of us want to do something for nothing. We want some sort of return. A reward of sort for energy used. Some gain for all the pain we might have gone through.
At different times, for different reasons the results will vary. Sometimes we will see a great return. Perhaps an exponential one. At other times we get what we expected. Then there are those times we seem to get less than what we hoped for. Even worse, we get nothing.
